    The Gender Effects of Audit Partners on Audit Outcomes: Evidence of Rule 3211 Adoption

    This paper investigates whether the impact of PCAOB Rule 3211 on the quality and cost of audit services differs between female and male audit partners. We find that the improvement of audit quality is more pronounced for female audit partners than male partners after Rule 3211 adoption. Female audit partners are also associated with higher increases in fees and report lags than male counterparts after the adoption of Rule 3211. Further, we find that the presence of female CFOs (or female audit committee members) attenuate the audit fees and report lag increases in the post-adoption periods. Overall, our findings confirm the importance of the gender effect on audit outcomes, which needs further consideration by standard setters. Our study also provides empirical evidence of the benefits of gender equality in the workplace

    Topology of global value chains : focus on the manufacturing industry, 2000-2015

    The increasing presence of global value chains (GVCs) has been considered one of the most important phenomena of 21st century international trade. A better understanding of GVCs is crucial for both trade policy making and business practices. This study applies various network analysis tools to the new GVC accounting system in which gross exports are decomposed into value-added terms through various GVC routes based on the ADB Multi-Regional Input–Output Tables (2000–2015). Using the proposed decomposition framework, the study helps divide manufacturing-related GVCs into sub-networks with clear visualization of countries’ participation patterns. The empirical results show that GVCs are not always like “chains”, but complex networks of hubs and spokes; GVCs are not very “global”, but still remain to be “regional”. These findings can significantly improve our understanding of the interdependency of countries in GVCs, which are normally invisible in traditional trade statistics

    Data Envelopment Analysis for Relative Efficiency Measurement of Chinese Hospitals: A Systematic Review

    The purpose was to explore the gap between China and the international world in efficiency measurement of hospitals with Data Envelopment Analysis, and to improve the standardization of healthcare efficiency measurement in China. A systematic review was conducted using appropriate search strategies. Studies were included containing DEA approaches regarding general hospital efficiency, published in international literature and in both Chinese and English about Chinese hospitals from January 2004 to October 2014. The results showed that statistical significances were found in indicators such as number of DMUs, percentage of allocative efficiency studies, ratio of studies with multiple years, number of studies with monetary indicators in input and output sets, etc. The statistical insignificance in some indicators such as the number of input and output indicators were also found among China, Europe, USA and others. Some problems were found in current DEA-based hospital efficiency studies in China, such as inappropriate selection of input-output indicators, no bias-correction on efficiency scores, etc. The standardization of DEA methods applied in China’s hospital efficiency research needs to be improved. Chinese researchers should pay more attention to latest international research findings, so as to keep pace with the cutting edge hospital efficiency research

    Displacement filed calculation of large-scale structures using computer vision with physical constrains

    Because of the advantages of easy deployment, low cost and non-contact, computer vision-based structural displacement acquisition technique has received wide attention and research in recent years. However, the displacement field acquisition of large-scale structures is a challenging topic due to the contradiction of camera field of view and resolution. This paper presents a large-scale structural displacement field calculation framework with integrated computer vision and physical constraints using only one camera. Firstly, the full-field image of the large-scale structure is obtained by processing the multi-view image using image stitching technique; secondly, the full-field image is meshed and the node displacements are calculated using an improved template matching method; and finally, the non-node displacements are described using shape functions considering physical constraints. The developed framework was validated using a scaled bridge model and evaluated by the proposed evaluation index for displacement field calculation accuracy. This paper can provide an effective way to obtain displacement fields of large-scale structures efficiently and cost-effectively

    Buccal Transmucosal Delivery System of Enalapril for Improved Cardiac Drug Delivery: Preparation and Characterization

    Purpose: To prepare and characterize buccal transmucosal delivery system of enalapril maleate for overcoming its low bioavailability, and hence provide improved therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance.Methods: Transmucosal drug delivery systems of enalapril maleate were formulated as buccal films by solvent casting technique using polyvinylpyrrolidone K90, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (high viscosity). The films were evaluated for film weight, thickness, folding endurance, drug content uniformity, surface pH, in vitro residence time, in vitro drug release and ex-vivo permeation.Results: All the formulations showed high drug content (96.45 to 98.49 %). Those with good swelling showed good residence time. In vitro drug release was highest for films prepared with high viscosity grade sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC- HV,F2), releasing 92.24 % of drug in 1.5 h) followed by F4 (containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone K-90 1 % w/v and SCMC (HV) 1 % w/v). Ex-vivo drug permeation at the end of 10 h was 82.24 and 89.9 % for F2 and F4, respectively.Conclusion: Prompt drug release was obtained from the formulation (F2) containing SCMC 2 % w/v with 10 mg enalapril. However, on the basis of the highest swelling and residence time, and controlled drug release, formulation F4 (containing PVP K-90 and SCMC HV) would be suitable for the development of buccal film for effective therapy of cardiac diseases.Keywords: Cardiac disease, Transmucosal, Buccal films, Enalapril maleate, Drug release, Ex-vivo permeatio

    Asymmetric bagging and feature selection for activities prediction of drug molecules

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Activities of drug molecules can be predicted by QSAR (quantitative structure activity relationship) models, which overcomes the disadvantages of high cost and long cycle by employing the traditional experimental method. With the fact that the number of drug molecules with positive activity is rather fewer than that of negatives, it is important to predict molecular activities considering such an unbalanced situation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here, asymmetric bagging and feature selection are introduced into the problem and asymmetric bagging of support vector machines (asBagging) is proposed on predicting drug activities to treat the unbalanced problem. At the same time, the features extracted from the structures of drug molecules affect prediction accuracy of QSAR models. Therefore, a novel algorithm named PRIFEAB is proposed, which applies an embedded feature selection method to remove redundant and irrelevant features for asBagging. Numerical experimental results on a data set of molecular activities show that asBagging improve the AUC and sensitivity values of molecular activities and PRIFEAB with feature selection further helps to improve the prediction ability.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Asymmetric bagging can help to improve prediction accuracy of activities of drug molecules, which can be furthermore improved by performing feature selection to select relevant features from the drug molecules data sets.</p
